Ghana is a relatively new country with an ancient history, a history that includes sagas of migration, empire building, trade in gold and slaves, colonialism and its aftermath, and a resurgence as one of the most successful contemporary modern African states. In places like the capital city of Accra, the more rural areas of the Volta region, and the coastal areas of Cape Coast, the students experienced culturally and historically significant sites and participated in various events at the center of community culture. By many student accounts, a memorable highlight of the course was staying with host families while in Ho, the capital of the Volta region. The National Theatre of Ghana serves as host for the course. Students experienced the rich cultural offerings of the country through dance, drumming and story telling workshops where international teachers developed the skills hidden in all of the students. These excursions into the culture of Ghana culminated in the students creating an outreach performance that recently toured several Baltimore area schools. Goucher hopes to continue offering students the opportunity to discover one of the friendliest and most culturally rich nations in the world. The course has returned in 2005 and 2007. |
