Help send Tim Williams to school!

Now a student at the Cape Coast Technical Institute, Tim Williams met Professor Brian Francoise when he first traveled to Ghana in 2003 with students from Goucher College. Essentially orphaned except for the modest support his grandmother could muster, Tim lived in an eight by eight foot shack when Professor Francoise first met him. Instead of school, Tim spent his days hawking shells and trinkets to tourists. Francoise was struck by Tim’s ingenuity, perseverance, and intelligence when he hired Tim as a guide for a day. Since then, Francoise has visited Tim three other times and has kept in close contact with Tim over the last four and half years. At an earlier phase of their relationship, Francoise paid for Tim’s “school fees” so he could pick up where he left off at a secondary school he attended briefly while his parents where alive. But the expenses became too much for Francoise to support over the long term.

You must understand that fewer than 20% of Ghanaian children receive any form of education. And with economic pressures to liberalize their economy, Ghana has done a way with government funded education. Students pay their own schools fees which can average more than $500.00 a year. The average yearly household income in Ghana is $300.00 per annum.

As a participant in the drive, you will receive updates about Tim's grades, activities, and related experiences. This page will also feature messages and correspondence from Tim and other biographical information. Please click here to give.
